Utter Autism

Why didn’t we do it sooner?!

In thinking about ways to help Adrian get the maximum enjoyment out of our upcoming Disney trip we considered his use of noise dampening headphones at school.  Could those help him handle the overwhelming noises at Disney World?

After speaking with his teacher about them, he suggested we simply pick up a pair in the ear protection section of our local hardware store.  I went to purchase them fully expecting to pay a fortune for a product we weren’t even sure he’d use.  I was shocked to find an adjustable, fold-able, perfect pair for less than $20!  It was definitely worth a try!

Now, of course, two weeks later I’m kicking myself for not having thought of this sooner!  Adrian LOVES his new ear phones!  He wears them almost constantly in the car, drowning out the chatter of his little brother that he so often finds annoying.  We have to force them off him when we arrive at camp.  He’d just keep them on if we let him. He even wears them in the house sometimes.

We’ve known forever that Adrian has a hard time with sound.  We know that it’s a source of frustration for him but for some reason we’d never thought to pursue this solution before.  Why?  I don’t know.  I’m just glad we’ve got them now! 🙂

  1. I didn’t think of it til now but I bet my 8 year FXS daughter could benefit from them too. She has a tough time with loud, noisy places or certain sounds. Thanks for the idea!! (Think I could find a Barbie pair 😉 )

  4. *slaps head* My goodness, why oh why did I not think of that! I just happened across your blog and read this and now I am wondering if it is divine intervention. I have an 8yr old with classic Autism (sounds much better than severe Autism) and I counsel parents on ways to help their kids. I am sure if one of them came to me with the issues I am having right now with my guy I would suggest headphones but sometimes I just need a little slap around the head to actually apply them to my life 🙂
Thank you so so much for the reminder. I will be going out next week to buy some!

  5. GREAT IDEA – now add Mozart to a CD and watch for REALLY PROFOUND results!
I work with sound therapy, more specific than music therapy, creating specific tones, notes or sounds for healing. MOZART IS AWESOME!
I have books I can recommend if interested. My web is http://www.asapranch.org I work with horses and kids with drumming, tunig forks and voice.
